Representing nearly one-third of the state’s 16 counties, the five teachers are all eligible for selection as the sole Maine Teacher of the Year this fall. They are all educators of elementary and middle school — teaching a range of subjects from science, reading, health, physical education, and the performing arts — and serve as leaders in their academic and cultural communities.

Abbie Anderson, B.S. ’23 (Sustainability and Business) has pioneered Clyk, an app that seeks to empower college students to meet others with similar interests, discover new hobbies and activities, and explore new places on and off campus. The app also earned Anderson the top prize of $10,000 in startup funding on the eighth season of the "Greenlight Maine" College Edition.

Shark Detection Buoy Deployment

Watch as UNE assistant professor John Mohan and his students deploy a real-time shark detection buoy in the waters off UNE’s coastal Biddeford Campus. The solar-powered buoy can detect tagged great white sharks as they make their way toward the shore and send a notice to lifeguards in real time to alert swimmers. The project is a win-win for both researchers studying shark populations and the state’s eager summertime beachgoers.
